Austin Film Society Cinema
Job Purpose Summary
The Austin Film Society Cinema seeks a part-time projectionist to safely operate and project digital content for AFS’s exhibition programs and external cinema rentals, ensuring the highest quality technical execution possible, while training in archival quality film-handling and the operation of 35mm projectors.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
Projection and Content Management
- Operates DCP/Alternative Media content for internal programs and external rentals.
- Performs quality control on all assigned digital content.
- Creates DCPs for digital content, including trailers, features, and other materials as needed.
- Quality checks/handles archive 35mm prints.
- Projects 35mm films.
- Provides A/V support for external rentals hosted in the cinema space.
Technical Maintenance and Support
- Troubleshoots and resolve Tier 1 technical issues with projection equipment.
- Cleans and maintains 35mm projectors under supervision.
- Adheres to archival best practices to balance presentation quality with long-term preservation requirements.
General Duties
- Maintains high quality presentation standards for all AFS exhibition programs and cinema rentals.
- Assists with regular cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Performs other duties as needed to support operational requirements.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues, with escalation when necessary.
- Strong computer skills and ability to quickly learn new software.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently for extended periods.
- Strong collaboration skills to meet operational and event needs.
- Excellent customer service and communication abilities
- Appreciation for AFS’s mission and vision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with 35mm film and projectors.
- Experience with live audio systems.
- Familiarity with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
- Interest in analog media.
Expected Hours
This is a part-time position requiring 12-20 hours per week, occasionally reaching up to 30 hours. Work hours will vary and include nights, weekends, and most holidays.
Complexities and Conditions of Employment
This role requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods, perform tasks involving keyboarding, mousing, reading, and writing, and lift up to 50 lbs. Availability for night and weekend shifts is essential.
