The American Revolutionary War began in April of 1775, at a time when Americans were unhappy with the British ruling of the colonies, and started wanting independence from Great Britain. This hostility towards the country was furthered in 1776 with the publication of Thomas Paine’s pamphlet titled “Common Sense”.

From the beginning, fourth of July celebrations have taken the shape of concerts, bonfires and parades, as well as the public readings of the Declaration of Independence. The first annual Independence Day celebrations were held in Philadelphia on July 4th 1777, even though the war was still taking place.

Screen Scotland

Abertay University officially launched The Big Real Virtual Production Film Academy, a new programme dedicated to nurturing the next generation of technology-driven filmmakers. Supported by Screen Scotland and UK Research and Innovation, this initiative provides a group of 20 graduates and early-career filmmakers with access to industry-standard tools, mentorship from industry experts, and professional resources. Learn More

Scotland Funding updates

Our National Lottery Film Festival and Screening Program Fund is now open for applications. The revised fund aims to support organizations that want to produce film festivals and screening programs in Scotland for a public audience. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with deadlines for submission depending on when your activity takes place.

In honor of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence, the NEH is issuing a call for proposals for Celebrate America!, a new initiative to recognize the nation’s semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026. NEH will award 250 challenge grants of up to $25,000 each for projects that focus on the founding of the American nation. (View Request for Proposals (RFP).)  

American Music Abroad

2025 American Music Abroad artists represent the new generation of musical ambassadors; reaching beyond concert halls to interact with other musicians and citizens around the globe. Each year, approximately 10 ensembles of American music in different genres are selected to embark on a two to three-week long, multi-country tour, where they engage with international audiences through public concerts, interactive performances with local musicians, lectures and demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, and media interviews.     LEARN MORE

SFFILM Documentary Film Fund

The SFFILM Documentary Film Fund (DFF) supports engaging documentaries in post-production which exhibit compelling stories, intriguing characters, and an original, innovative visual approach. Since its launch in 2011, the SFFILM Documentary Film Fund has distributed more than $900,000 to advance new work by filmmakers nationwide.
